Escaping the crowds in Egypt
Boasting a fantastic climate, beautiful beaches and a rich historical heritage, Egypt has become one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations. It abounds with bustling cities, ancient monuments and lively seaside resorts – but where do you go if you want to get off the beaten track?
Dakhla Oasis: This stunning spot encompasses two of Egypt’s most pristine historical towns: Mut and Al-Qasr. Situated in the centre of the country, approximately 350 kilometres from the Nile, it is sufficiently isolated to escape the attention of all but the most adventurous tourists.
Despite encompassing less than 100 square kilometres, the area has plenty to recommend it to visitors, including 600 hot springs and several impressive historical sites. Don’t miss out on a tour of Mut’s old citadel, which boasts awe-inspiring views over the surrounding desert. Al-Qasr still retains much of its traditional, medieval architecture, with some buildings dating back to as early as 924.
Sidi Abdel Rahman: If you fancy a spot of sunbathing but don’t want to fight for a space on a lounger, then Sidi Abdel Rahman could be your perfect destination. The sleepy Mediterranean town is located on an endless white sand beach and offers plenty of opportunity for swimming and relaxation. It’s not the liveliest of Egyptian settlements and you certainly won’t find the sophisticated night life that characterises the country’s larger towns, but if it’s peace and quiet you’re after then Sidi Abdel Rahman is the ideal choice.
Dahab: Once an anonymous provincial town, Dahab has seen increasing tourism industry growth in recent years. Despite becoming popular with backpackers and independent travellers, however, it retains a peaceful atmosphere and is a great destination choice for anybody keen to escape the crowds while continuing to enjoy good tourism infrastructure. Dahab is located on the Gulf of Aqaba – made famous by the legend of Aladdin – and the swimming and snorkeling are both excellent. Daily buses to Cairo, Sharm el-Sheikh and Suez also make the town easily accessible.
If you’re keen to combine a visit to some of Egypt’s top tourist sites with an excursion off the beaten track then you may want to think about booking onto a tour. Choose a reputable all-inclusive provider such as Thomas Cook who offer some very reasonable deals on holidays, especially when you book in advance.
